1. Introduction

Little Narratives Pty Ltd ("we", "us", "our") operates the Little Narratives platform, including our web application, mobile apps for educators (Center App), and mobile apps for families (Family App).

We are committed to protecting the privacy of our users, particularly the children whose information is entrusted to us through educators and families. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our platform.

2. Data Storage & Processing Locations

Your data is stored in Australia

All user data, child profiles, stories, and media are stored within Australia (Sydney region). AI processing is performed via a paid enterprise AI API under a Data Processing Addendum — see details below.

*AI prompts (containing child first names, ages, interests, and educator observations) are processed by our AI provider's paid enterprise API, which may use data centres outside Australia. This processing is governed by a Data Processing Addendum, which contractually requires the provider to protect your data in accordance with equivalent privacy standards. Your data is not used to train or improve AI models.

Authentication metadata (email, login timestamps) is processed by our authentication provider, which uses secured global infrastructure.

3. Information We Collect

3.1 Account Information

  • Email address and password (for account creation)
  • Center/organisation name and address (for educators)
  • Name (for parents/guardians)

3.2 Child Information ("Child Trait Data")

We collect the following information about children, which is entered by educators or parents/guardians (not by children themselves). We refer to appearance descriptions and personality traits collectively as"Child Trait Data":

  • First name only (no surnames)
  • Date of birth (for age-appropriate content generation)
  • Appearance descriptions (hair colour, skin tone, clothing preferences) — used to generate recognisable AI illustrations
  • Personality traits and interests (for personalised story themes)
  • Learning goals and developmental observations
  • Group/classroom assignments

3.3 Educator Inputs

Educators provide the following inputs, which are processed by AI to generate or enhance content:

  • Voice-recorded observations (transcribed to text via a secure speech-to-text service)
  • Written narrative observations (polished by AI for pedagogical quality)
  • Story prompts describing situations, learning goals, or challenges
  • Notes and contextual information about children's behaviour

3.4 AI-Generated Content

  • Personalised stories created by our AI
  • AI-generated watercolour illustrations featuring child descriptions
  • Personalised songs with custom lyrics
  • AI-polished educator observations (narrative refinement and EYLF mapping)

3.5 Technical Information

  • Device information (for app functionality)
  • Usage analytics (anonymised)
  • Error logs (for debugging)

4. How We Use Your Information

  • Generate personalised content: Create stories, illustrations, and music tailored to each child using Child Trait Data and educator inputs
  • Polish educator observations: AI refines educator-written or voice-dictated observations into professional pedagogical narratives, mapping them to EYLF outcomes
  • Transcribe voice observations: Convert educator speech to text using a secure speech-to-text service for documentation
  • Connect families and educators: Enable sharing of child learning journeys between centers and families
  • Improve our services: Analyse usage patterns to enhance the platform
  • Comply with regulations: Support EYLF (Early Years Learning Framework) and NQS (National Quality Standard) documentation
  • Provide support: Respond to enquiries and troubleshoot issues

5. AI-Generated Content

Important: content review responsibility

Little Narratives uses artificial intelligence to generate personalised stories, illustrations, and music. While we strive to create appropriate, high-quality content, AI-generated content may occasionally contain errors, inaccuracies, or content that may not be suitable for all children.

It is the sole responsibility of educators and parents/guardians to review all AI-generated content before sharing it with children. By using Little Narratives, you acknowledge and accept this responsibility.

We continuously work to improve our AI safety measures, but we cannot guarantee that all generated content will be appropriate for every child or situation.

5.1 How AI Processes Your Data

To generate personalised content and polish educator observations, the following information is sent to our AI provider for processing:

Data Sent to AIPurpose
Child's first namePersonalising story text and characters
Child's ageAge-appropriate language and content complexity
Child Trait Data (appearance, interests, personality)Generating personalised illustrations and tailoring story themes
Educator-written or voice-dictated observationsAI polishing into professional narratives with EYLF outcome mapping
Educator story prompts (situations, goals, challenges)Generating relevant social narratives
Child's photo (if provided)Generating recognisable watercolour illustrations

Additionally, educator voice recordings are sent to our speech-to-text service for transcription. These audio streams are processed in real-time and are not stored by the provider after transcription is complete.

5.2 Human Review Before Saving

Educators and parents always review AI output before it is saved

All AI-generated content — including polished observations, stories, illustrations, and music — is presented to the educator or parent as adraft for review. No AI-generated content is saved to a child's profile, shared with families, or presented to children until the responsible adult has reviewed and explicitly approved it.

This human-in-the-loop workflow ensures that:

  • Educators review AI-polished observations and can edit, rewrite, or discard them before saving to a child's timeline
  • Story and music content is reviewed by the requesting educator or parent before being saved to the child's library
  • AI-generated character illustrations are reviewed before being set as a child's profile image
  • No AI output bypasses human oversight at any point in the workflow

5.3 AI Data Protections

Your data is protected

  • No model training: Your data is never used to train, fine-tune, or improve AI models. We use a paid enterprise API tier which contractually prohibits this.
  • No human review by provider: Your prompts and Child Trait Data are not reviewed by our AI provider's employees for product improvement.
  • Data Processing Addendum: All AI processing is governed by a Data Processing Addendum, providing contractual privacy protections equivalent to Australian Privacy Principles.
  • Minimal retention: Our AI provider retains processing logs only for abuse detection purposes and for a limited duration.
  • No persistent storage of voice data: Audio from voice observations is streamed for transcription and is not stored after processing.

6. Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services to provide our platform:

ServicePurposeData Shared
Cloud Infrastructure ProviderAuthentication, database, storageAccount data, content
AI Processing Provider (Paid Enterprise Tier)Story text, image, and music generationChild first names, ages, interests, photos, educator observations (see Section 5.1)
Audio Generation ProviderMusic generationSong lyrics (no personally identifiable information)
Analytics & Error ReportingUnderstanding how the app is used, diagnosing crashesApp events (screens opened, features used), device type, app version, an app-generated account identifier. No child names, photos or story content.
Advertising Platform (Meta)Measuring which ads lead to installs and sign-upsA fixed list of milestone events (app opened, account created, onboarding completed, subscription started), an app-generated account identifier, and — on Android — your device advertising ID. No child data is ever included.

Our advertising measurement is deliberately narrow. We send the occurrence of an event and nothing else: never a child's name, age, photo, interests, or any story, song or observation. The full list of events we share is fixed in the app's source code, and we do not send the contents of anything you or your child create.

Our AI provider's paid enterprise API is governed by a Data Processing Addendum that contractually prohibits using your data for model training. AI processing may occur at data centres outside Australia, as disclosed in Section 2. We ensure all providers comply with Australian privacy requirements.

7. How We Share Information

We share your information only in the following circumstances:

  • Between educators and parents: Content and notes are shared between linked parties within the same center
  • Service providers: With third-party services as described above
  • Legal requirements: When required by Australian law or to protect rights and safety

We never sell personal information, and we never share anything about a child with an advertiser.

To understand which of our ads bring families to Little Narratives, we share a small, fixed set of adult account milestones (for example "an account was created") with our advertising platform, as set out in Section 6. On Android this includes your device advertising ID. You can reset or delete that ID at any time in your device settings — on Android under Settings → Google → Ads, and on iOS we do not use one at all. Turning it off does not change anything about how the app works for you.

8. Children's Privacy

Children do not have accounts

Children are subjects of our platform, not users. Only adults (educators and parents/guardians) create accounts and enter information on behalf of children.

We take extra care with children's information because we understand its sensitivity. Child data is:

  • Accessed only by authorised educators and linked parents
  • Stored securely with encryption at rest and in transit
  • Used only to generate personalised educational content
  • Never shared with advertisers or used for marketing — the advertising measurement described in Sections 6 and 7 covers adult account activity only, and no child name, age, photo, interest or generated story ever forms part of it
  • Never used to train AI models (contractually guaranteed)
  • Subject to guardian consent controls for AI story participation

Guardians can disable AI story participation for their child at any time through the Family App. When disabled, the child will not be included in any new AI-generated stories.

9. Your Rights (Australian Privacy Principles)

Under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth), you have the following rights:

  • Access: Request a copy of your personal information
  • Correction: Request correction of inaccurate information
  • Deletion: Request deletion of your data (subject to legal requirements)
  • Complaint: Lodge a complaint with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC)

To exercise these rights, contact us at privacy@littlenarratives.com.au.

10. Data Security

We protect your data through:

  • Encryption in transit (TLS/HTTPS) and at rest (AES-256)
  • Role-based access controls limiting who can access data
  • Regular security audits and monitoring
  • Secure authentication with password hashing

11. Data Retention

We retain your data for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide services. When an account is deleted:

  • Account data is deleted within 30 days
  • Child data is deleted when no longer linked to any active accounts
  • Backup copies are purged within 90 days

12. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes by email or through the app. Your continued use of Little Narratives after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
